The real truth is that the oldest barns are usually the unpainted ones while those with many coats of paint have long since disappeared. This is no condemnation of paint, which is necessary for most of today’s lumber. It is proof of the well-seasoned virgin timber of yesterday which was allowed to breathe and dry last longer.
